The biggest news at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show wasn’t the new products introduced or the raging blizzard gripping the Windy City. What created the largest buzz was the pronouncement by Hyundai Motors America chief John Krafcik that a price war has broken out between car manufacturers. Krafcik shared his thoughts informally with members of the press while at the auto show, sparking widespread interest as news filtered down to the masses.

GM Discounting

Krafcik’s comments solidified what others have been recently been examining: unusually high incentives are being offered by some manufacturers in a bid to increase sales and grab additional market share. Notably, GM is leading the way, averaging $3,762 off of the price every vehicle sold in the United States in January 2011 according to Automotive News. What’s more, that amount is significantly higher with some brands including Cadillac, which is averaging just over $5,600 off of the price of its models.

Although Krafcik noted that GM started the most recent round of price cutting and those cuts were matched by Toyota, Ford and Chrysler have discounted their cars significantly too. Honda and Nissan are playing the discount game too, which means that each of the Big Six manufacturers are working the incentives angle hard.

Camry Savings

For consumers, discounting is a boon, particularly for the car shopper who isn’t loyal to one brand. But, loyalty seems to present some advantages for new car buyers too as most manufacturers are luring customers back to the brand, by extending loyalty rebates on top of already generous offers. Toyota, for example, is offering Camry owners an extra $500 rebate for buying a new Camry reports Auto Trends Magazine. Customers can also get a rebate or choose low rate financing when they buy new.

Some of current rebate offers aren’t much of a surprise including the $4,000 discount GM is giving for buyers of the 2011 Buick Lucerne. That model is aged, a slow seller and is likely a year or two away from being discontinued. Still. deep discounting so early in the year is unusual, suggesting that further price drops will be in the offing especially if competing brands fight back.

Hyundai Incentives

Hyundai offers some of the lowest discounting in the country, averaging just $1,200 per vehicle. The brand’s cars are usually priced five to 10 percent lower than competing models and are routinely better equipped. Thus, discounting after the fact hasn’t been a Hyundai staple because the Korean car company keeps its sticker prices low.

If you are a car shopper, the a price war can save you hundreds perhaps thousands of dollars off the price of a new car. War also means that there are winners and losers, with the latter likely to be car manufacturers who can’t or won’t match today’s juicy incentives.

DaimlerChrysler Nets $3.3 Billion Profit

DaimlerChrysler has reported a profit of $3.3 billion for 2005 based on the strength of its Chrysler Group and commercial truck divisions. The company’s Mercedes division actually lost money in 2005 as it undergoes an extensive overhaul of its operations.

Competing automakers GM lost $8.6 billion while the Ford Motor Company turned a $2 billion profit on the strength of strong profits outside of the North American market.

Ford vs. Chevy: The Winner

Ford and Chevrolet are locked in an annual battle for sales leadership in the U.S. Despite the insurgency of foreign brands, Ford and Chevrolet continue to rule the roost.

Winning the battle of yearly sales is something neither automaker takes lightly. For years, Chevrolet was the clear winner before Ford rallied and started to beat out Chevy in the 1980s. According to Automotive News, the winner for 2005 is Chevrolet by just over 17,000 units. The totals include cars and light duty trucks, however if medium and heavy duty trucks are included, then the winner is Ford by approximately 5,000 units.

Kia’s European Surge

Credit Kia with setting records. In sales, that is. According to Motoring Life, Kia’s sales in the Western European market rose nearly 40% in 2005. For the third consecutive year, Kia registered the biggest gains in year to year sales in the market which covers 18 nations.

Kia’s growth has stemmed from intense marketing efforts and the popularity of its Rio compact car and Sportage compact SUV. Although overall market share is very small at 1.6%, the trend for further growth is in place as the Korean automaker introduces European versions of its Optima sedan, Sedona minivan, and other models. Kia will be opening a new plant in Slovakia later this year to handle the increased demand for its vehicles.

Jeep Supplier Jobs Opening Up

Although GM and Ford are shedding jobs, one American automaker is holding steady. Jeep, a division of DaimlerChrysler, is experiencing robust demand for its Liberty and Wrangler vehicles as well as for the Dodge Nitro, a rebadged Liberty. Thus, as many as 1,000 supplier jobs paying in the neighborhood of $11-$13 per hour are springing up to supply the Toledo plant.

The Ohio News Network is reporting that as many as 200 laid off Jeep workers will be called back too as they provide third shift work to help build the Nitro.

G5 For Pontiac

Autoweek is reporting that Pontiac will soon get its own version of the Chevrolet Cobalt. Dubbed the G5, the car will fill a void that has been in the Pontiac line up ever since the Sunbird exited the scene a few years back. The G5 is expected to debut this fall as a 2007 model.

In addition to bringing in the G5, Pontiac is planning on getting rid of the Montana SV6 minivan, citing that the vehicle doesn’t fit the division’s branding.

By Otto Wortman

I admit that I love cars, so it’s easier for me to apply myself to the discipline of washing and waxing. Still, I often get busy and have a hard time keeping up. What keeps me motivated is the knowledge that the time and effort pays off in the long run.

Many people don’t know that washing a car fails to remove all the possible contaminants that can adhere to your car’s paint. It’s certainly important to wash with regularity. And it’s a good idea to use a car shampoo, a deep bucket of water a proper washing mitt and micro fiber towels for drying. It won’t hurt to use a soft cotton terry towel but use a light touch. Drying is faster and easier with an auto squeegee.

It’s important to wash and wax your car away from direct sunlight and it helps if the surface is cool. An overcast day can be ideal. A hot surface can make water dry faster – with unappealing water spots. And it also makes wax harder to work with.

There are lots of different kinds of wax on the market and many different ways to apply it. Your paint needs to be “cleaned” after it’s been washed. That means removing those extra contaminants I mentioned earlier. Tree sap, bug juice, industrial fallout and other airborne evils can stick to your paint, preventing it from having the kind of shine that you want. It’s also important to know that “clean” paint is easier to wash and keep clean.

After your car has been washed you then go to the paint cleaning stage. There are a few ways to do this. A common way is to use a cleaner wax, which incorporates a cleaning agent and wax in one product and applied in one step. Another way to do it is to is to use a paint cleaner as a special product. You can then apply a pure carnauba wax, or use a polish before the wax. A third way to do this is to use detailing clay.

Many people are unfamiliar with detailing clay but it’s a great product and can be very effective in removing contaminants. Detailing clay is available online, at many auto parts stores and from top quality catalogs. Detailing clay requires some kind of lubricant in the process, like a quick detailing spray. You can also use a spray bottle with soapy water. The clay won’t last forever. When it starts falling apart you know that it’s pulled up too much junk to work any longer.

One of the advantages of detailing clay relates to the downside of using cleaner wax. If you press too hard when using cleaner wax you can create swirl marks in your paint. The same is true when washing your car. Detailing clay greatly decreases the risk of making those marks, and it’s pretty easy to use. It sounds kind of odd, but it really works well.

The end result of regular washing and occasional waxing is a car that you’ll be more proud to own and sell. When you take that kind of care of your car, be prepared for ready buyers. On the other hand, you might like your car so much you might not want to sell it.

By Matthew Keegan

The auto industry is buzzing following unsubstantiated news that the Ford Motor Company is planning to kill off its Mercury brand. That story, first reported by Automotive News in late May 2010, says that Ford will continue to starve Mercury of products before finally discontinuing the marque in 2013.

Automotive Press

As usual, Ford isn’t commenting about what the automotive press is saying, but they have indicated that a decision will be announced during the company’s July 2010 general meeting. If Ford kills off Mercury, this 70 plus year old American brand will join Hummer, Saturn, Pontiac, Oldsmobile, Plymouth and Eagle as brands that have died or were extinguished within the past 15 years, underscoring a shift in the way car makers market and sell their cars.

Mercury’s demise isn’t likely to result in a huge outpouring of grief from the car buying public. According to The Auto Writer, fewer than 100,000 Mercurys were sold in 2009, a brand that has already disappeared from Canada. Most Mercury dealerships are tied in with Lincoln while a number of Lincoln dealers already sell Ford brand models. Ford is by far and away the largest brand for the Blue Oval, while Mercury only sells thinly disguised copies of existing Ford product.

Premium Brand

Ford Motor Company corporate material says that the brand was launched by Ford in 1939 in order to give customers an intermediate brand between “for the masses” Ford and luxury make Lincoln. For a time, Mercury sold well, topping 500,000 models sold in 1978 before beginning to decline.

Mercury has always represented different trim level Ford products, with the occasional unique or differentiated product in the mix. The Mercury Capri was unique to the brand, car imported from Ford of Europe for a time. The Mercury Grand Marquis saw some success as a livery model, but then Ford has long sold the Ford Crown Victoria and Lincoln Town Car too.

Small Cars

Mercury’s demise had been discussed for many years, but soon after Alan Mulally took over the reigns of the Blue Oval, the thinking was that Mercury would become a small car brand, somewhat in the way Toyota markets Scion. However, all of the new product continues to find its way to Ford, demonstrating that the auto trends are not in Mercury’s favor.

Instead, Mercury will soon be without a single new product while its older models are quietly retired, yet another footnote brand in more than one hundred years of US automotive history.

By Marc Webber

Have you always wanted to turn your passion for cars into a fulfilling career in the automotive field. The automotive jobs sector offered about 800,000 jobs in 2008, with the typical salary for each car mechanic being just about $30,000-$55,000 per year. The industry prefers high school graduate students having hands-on experience in the field. As a result, if you prefer a gratifying career in this particular field, sign up for a community college, where you will get the practical knowledge of handling vehicles and identifying high-tech issues.

Education, Training, and Certification

With cars and trucks functioning on complicated integrated auto electronic systems and sophisticated technology nowadays, the job of a car technician has evolved from being merely mechanical to high technology. Automotive service experts are required to use reasoning and ability to identify complicated issues and turn into high-tech problem solvers. You need to complete a proper training curriculum from an auto mechanic institution, in which you will get the necessary classroom knowledge in math, physics, metal work, mechanical drawing, science, computer skills, and automobile maintenance together with training. Therefore, the role of mechanic colleges and schools has grown to be essential in offering auto mechanic programs delivering mechanical training to prepare technicians for a prosperous career.

Numerous high schools provide recognized auto mechanic training programs for their students and award a high school diploma along with a certificate. A number of high schools are affiliated with Automotive Youth Education Systems (AYES), a nonprofit association which brings together high schools, participating car dealers and manufacturers from the automotive industry, to help students get ready for entry-level technician opportunities at a car dealership or repair shop. However, if a mechanical training curriculum wasn’t offered at your local or regional high school, sign up for a postsecondary training program at a local community college that offers auto mechanic courses, including mechanic training, and awards an associate degree or certificate. The auto training programs range between six to twelve months, which mostly depend upon how many hours you spend on the program every week. After you graduate from a post-secondary mechanic program, the automotive jobs market opens up to you. Some firms offer in-house training in such programs for entry-level technicians who have not been through the courses in their high school before engaging them in entry-level jobs. Such mechanic apprenticeship and training courses are becoming very popular ever these days. However, if you’re still not prepared for a full-time trade school course, you could start working as a trainee mechanic in a workshop in an attempt to learn the essential skills, besides registering for an evening course or online auto mechanic program. You get the ability to learn from experienced technicians.

Being an auto mechanic trainee, it is important to begin your employment by accomplishing routine service and straightforward repairs and troubleshooting problems for several months. Intricate specialties, such as transmission repair and air conditioning, demand at least one to two years of training and experience. Therefore, spending two to five years in a dealership service center or repair shop will give you the adequate experience to become a fully qualified service technician.

Growing Value of ASE Certification It will be better yet if you seek out those community colleges whose programs have been developed specifically to prepare you for the Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) certification. Though ASE certification is not required for automotive service work, a lot more employers prefer applicants with such certifications, which can be earned in any of the eight aspects of automotive service, which include brake systems, engine repair, and electrical system, among others. Once you have a mechanic certification from the National Institute for ASE, you will possess the upper hand and be given preference in the marketplace. Once you have passed the certification exam and have a minimum of two years of working experience, the ASE certification will truly add value to your resume and enhance your marketability.

Career Opportunity While applying for a job in this field, list all of your current mechanic certifications and highlight your experience.
Mobile Service

Most paintless dent removal companies offer mobile services that bring the repair shop right to your home or office. Paintless dent repair doesn’t require any of the paints or fillers that call for the confines of a body shop, so the technicians can perform the repairs right in your own parking lot. Whether you’re looking to reduce the amount of time invested in the process, the high costs of gasoline, or the inconvenience of having your vehicle out of commission for a few hours (or even days), mobile services are one of the primary benefits of paintless dent removal.

Free Online Estimates

When you choose a reputable paintless dent removal company like Dings Plus of San Jose, CA, you get to take advantage of free online estimates. You can even eliminate a step by visiting the company’s website and submitting a picture and description of the dent – all without ever leaving your home. You always know what to expect as far as costs and time investment go, which can save you quite a bit of worry and effort.

Saving Money

Paintless dent removal is also a cheaper alternative to traditional body repair work. Since the technicians work with their tools and skills – as opposed to auto paint, sanders, and body fillers – costs are kept low. The overall time investment is shorter, and you can ultimately increase your car’s value without sacrificing the original exterior paint. When it comes to the final bill, you can expect paintless dent removal to save up to 70% of what traditional paint and body shops would charge to repair the same damage.

Guaranteed Workmanship

As with the free online estimates, choosing a reputable PDR company to perform your dent removal means that you get service above and beyond the ordinary. As long as your dent falls within the specified criterion, all workmanship is guaranteed. You can expect your car to return to its former condition and stay that way.

Environmentally Safe Repair Technique

Since your dent won’t require any auto paint, body fillers, or sanding work, paintless dent removal is one of the most environmentally sound options available in the field of car repair. You can get your car back to its great original shape without worrying about adding any more harmful chemicals into the environment or taking up any more energy than is strictly necessary. This means a lot in California, a state known for its commitment to reducing the ecological footprint of the populace.

The Bottom Line

No matter why you choose paintless dent removal, rest assured that you are making the right choice. The reason it has become so popular in today’s automotive community is because of the great benefits for everyone involved – especially for you.

When you think of automobile news, you may not expect to read about a renowned artist. However, a recent automobile news release contained just that. An artist, his talent and an innovative company looking to change the way you look at windshields is the current focus of much media attention and automobile news.

In an automotive news announcement made, Window Canvas, the leader in Exterior Applied See-Thru Window Graphics for cars, trucks and SUVs, confirmed an agreement with well-known artist Jeff Wilkie. The exclusive contract was signed with Persistence of Vision, which gave Window Canvas the license to represent the art of Jeff Wilkie on their vehicle graphics.

If you have ever noticed a rear windshield with an impressive, and colorful, image covering the entire back glass, then you are already familiar with the concept of transparent window graphics. They prevent viewing the interior from the rear, but allow the passengers and driver to see out. Window graphics are often quite detailed and beautiful, which is the concept behind Windows Canvas and their new artwork license with Jeff Wilkie.

“Jeff’s breathtaking artwork is the perfect addition to Window Canvas and our image library,” commented Bianca J. Hennings, Vice President of Sales and Marketing for Window Canvas. According to the recent automobile news release, Hennings concluded, “We are very excited about his imagery being displayed on people’s cars all over the country and even the world.”

Jeff Wilkie is an accomplished artist whose collections include both ocean and marine life images. Among the many depictions, Wilkie portrays an artistic image of dolphins, seascapes, whales and other wildlife. “I am very happy to have my artwork added to their line of products,” Jeff admits. His work has been licensed for a variety of products, including greeting cards, puzzles, t-shirts and computer mouse pads. To add even more credence to Wilkie’s art, his images have been offered as part of the fine art prize category on “The Price Is Right” televised game show. The products featuring Wilkie’s art are constantly ranked number one in sales. Beginning in the spring of 2006, his art will also be featured on checks, checkbook covers, address labels and wall murals throughout the United States.

Window Canvas is the recognized leader in exterior applied see-thru window graphics for automobiles. Their website features more than 2,000 images, including patriotic, flags, sports, personal expressions, nature, military and camouflage scenes. In addition to their many options, Window Canvas also offers website visitors with an opportunity to customize their own rear window graphics using a patent pending technology feature called “Create Your Own.”

An artist who loves to create images and a company who loves to incorporate them into windows have come together to generate widespread automobile news attention. Websites and various industry publications are sure to be among the first to report automobile news and especially when it’s as beautiful as Wilkie’s artwork.

As far as I can see the new 2009 Camaro concept car is being very well received in the automotive community, at the first a lot of people hemmed and hawed about one thing or another, just the same as I did. But after spending some time doing a little research on it, I discovered that the 2009 Camaro is a very well put together car for a concept car.

At first I thought that it could use a few upgrades, but after thinking about it, there were a lot of Camaro fans putting in their two cents when Chevrolet took the Camaro out of production, in 2002, and I thought that Chevrolet had made a horrible mistake at the time.

The result of a lot of people telling Chevrolet what they thought the new Camaro should be, has made it a real work of art, and I for one will give Chevrolet their kudos. They have put a lot of effort in to making the Camaro a car that most people could like, and if they didn’t at the first, then they’d get used to it.

At SEMA the CEO of Chevrolet drove out in the new Camaro concept car, and their wasn’t a dry eye in the house, but the return of an icon will bring out the joy and happiness to a lot of people, when the big man spoke about the car he said: a few things would be changed at the time of release, but nothing major, he’d mentioned that, right now it has 22″ wheels on the rear end, and that will be changed to 20″ when the car is released.

The front wheels are destined for a change also, for from 21″ to 20″, nothing that will be to noticeable, but it will help them save some money on the production of the car, he also said that there were going to be some changes in the interior also, they would change the center consol from stainless steel to plastic, in an effort to save money on the production.

All this is supposed to keep the base price on the car down to the $20,000 range, and that says a lot for their efforts to sell their new cars, in this range almost anybody can afford to own one of them.

The Camaro concept with it’s low slung stance, it has the look of a sports car, while still retaining it’s identity as a muscle car, Chevrolet has done brilliant work on this car, and will get one big “YAY” form this muscle car maniac.

David C. Atkin
I’ve been in the automotive industry for about 25 years, and it time to start giving back some of the joy that it has given me.
